The 365 Jason Project

Recently I heard about something called a "365 Project".  Some may ask, "What is a 365 Project?"  Being a photographer (and I googled '365 Project') it is a picture a day for each day in a year....365 Project.  Sounds interesting?  I thought so too but then I thought, 'what do I photograph?'.  Just then my grandson, Jason, walked into my office, with his little laugh and big smile, so I said to myself,  'why not Jason?'.

I'm sure I've heard of the '365 Project' before but never gave it much thought.  However, when I decided to photograph Jason, part of me was a little disappointed that I did not start this project on the day he was born. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get that question a lot with this project.  Also, it sounds funny to refer to Jason as my 'project'.  He's my grandson and I love him so much and am enjoying every  new thing he does or sees in his life.

Jason will be turning 1 on January 25th, 2012.  So, on January 25th I will start my 365 days of photographing calling it, "The 365 Jason Project".  My pictures will be all about Jason, his environment including people, places, objects and the experiences of a 1 year old walking, crawling, climbing, scooting and running his way up until his 2nd birthday in 2013.

So stay tuned, and watch for Day 1 on January 25th of The 365 Jason Project.

Today is Day 1_Picture 1 of the "365 Jason Project".  What better way to celebrate his first birthday with chocolate cake!  At first, Jason just looked at the small piece we gave him and had no interest in it.  When his mommy put his finger in the icing and then to his mouth, well,......as you can see, that was the end of that piece of cake.  There are some other fun pictures of Jason, but I'll share those with the rest of the family.  So for now, enjoy Day 1_Picture 1 and I hope you'll follow along as I capture Jason for the next 364 days.

                                                                  Day 2_Picture 2
                                                                   Mommy and me.

                                                                  Day 3_Picture 3
Hey little man, I know my couch is older than you, but I would like to keep it a little longer.

                                                                   Day 4_Picture 4
Today was a 'grab your camera as fast as you can' day.  This was a great picture of Aimee in her pajamas with Jason strapped to her back while decorating for his (3rd) birthday party.  We actually had a 'pre' birthday party with some family members, then celebrated his birthday (Day 1_Picture 1) on his birthday.  The picture today is the next to last of his 'post' birthday parties.  One more party tomorrow with other family members however, I doubt very much if I'll catch any of them in their pajamas.  Enjoy.

                                                                    Day 5_Picture 5
It's been a busy week for our little birthday boy here.  Instead of posting Jason eating more birthday cake, I decided to capture bath time.  Although I've helped with bath time when Jason was first born, and knew how much he enjoyed getting wet and playing in the pool over the summer.  I did not know how much he enjoyed bath time.  I'm just surprised my camera didn't get a good soaking as Jason did.

                                                                   Day 6_Picture 6
                                                                       Reading time.

                                                                    Day 7_Picture 7
Let's see,....52 weeks in a  year and this is day 7, so now only 51 weeks left?  I don't know if it sounds any better then saying only 358 days left of 'The 365 Jason Project'.  It is a challenge but one that I'm enjoying.  He may get into the same things every day, but every day is new to him.  In this picture, Aimee (Jason's mommy) said it could be an ad for Gerber.  Well, I don't know if he's ready for the ad world but I do know that tomorrow at some point in the day or evening, I will be ready again with my camera, and posting my favorite  photo of the day on my blog for everyone to see.

Day 8_Picture 8
Decisions, decisions.  Tonight I started out with a few pictures of Jason.  Major closeups while he was hanging out at my desk.  A little later, my daughter whistles for me.  She is in the midst of changing his diaper and of course with this age, they take off running through the house buck naked.  Who could not resist to take those pictures?  I know I couldn't.  But then I was in a dilemma because I'm hearing others tell me that you cannot post a picture of a nude baby.  What constitutes nude?  Day 5 picture, Jason is in the bathtub, but you cannot see anything which some would think is inappropriate.  Tonight I took a picture of Jason walking away from me, carrying my red sweater and his adorable little backside smiling at me.  So I post this question to those who are visiting, The 365 Jason Project:  Would posting the picture of his little bottom be considered kiddy porn?  Let me know.  Other than that, enjoy Day 8.

                                                                 Day 9_Picture 9
I think my grandson is becoming a photo ham.  But what can I say?  At least he was sitting when he had this face.  Normally I get this face when he's rushing me.

                                                                  Day 10_Picture 10
One of Jason's (and Chica's) favorite past times....breakfast, lunch, and dinner!  Chica has never had it so good since Jason arrived.  All those pennies from heaven every day.

                                                                  Day 11_Picture 11
Jason loves to clean out the kitchen drawers.  Especially letting the towels fly through the air.

                                                                    Day 12_Picture 12
Jason with his great grandma Sadie.

                                                                   Day 13_Picture 13
I guess the sooner you learn to ride a bike the better, even if you're only 1 year old and still getting the hang of this walking business.

                                                                Day 14_Picture 14
So far with photographing Jason, each day I've taken anywhere from 7 pictures or more.  Today, was just this one.  I could have taken a few more but knew that this was the one.  When I came home and saw Jason in his carrier attached to his father, I didn't even say 'hello' or 'don't move'.  I just went straight for my camera.  Everyone is getting use to the project and understands it's not about 'posing' for a picture or of just Jason alone.  It is Jason's life and his surroundings.  I couldn't of asked for a better picture for today.  Father and son in their quiet time together.

                                                                 Day 15_Picture 15
One of Jason's (or our dog Chica's) other past times, is Chica trying to lick Jason's face or Jason avoiding the wrath of slobber.

                                                                   Day 16_Picture 16
"Is it time for bed yet?"

                                                              Day 17_Picture 17
I can imagine what he's thinking, "If I can only grab my train, she'll put me down".

                                                                   Day 18_Picture 18
Jason loves looking out the window.

                                                                    Day 19_Picture 19
"Where did Chica go?"  I know she's on this couch somewhere.

                                                                    Day 20_Picture 20
                                                              Jason loves his rocking horse!

                                                                    Day 21_Picture 21
What a fun morning!  I couldn't wait to get home from my 'normal' job to post this picture.  It was fun watching Aimee brush Jason's teeth,...all 4!

                                                               Day 22_Picture 22
I really enjoy capturing Jason "as is".  I feel that that is the purpose of the 365 project, to capture the adventures of a 1-year-old with his family and whatever other adventures he encounters exploring his world. Although I'm only on day 22, I've encountered other family members who are interacting with Jason to stop or step aside.  Also, I've had the, "Oh, you should get this picture".  It's not about posing for a picture or creating a specific scene.  It's all about capturing the life of a 1-year-old  walking, crawling, climbing, scooting and running his way up until his 2nd birthday in 2013, and including anyone or anything during this time.  Enjoy.  P.S. Please remember to comment on my facebook page:  Lillian Ovando Photography.

A camera lesson with great grandpa Joe

Day 27_Picture 27
Today I was home sick, but managed to get a doctors appointment, and squeez in another couple of doctors, fun....however, in between doctor's visit, my truck broke down.  Aimee and Israel came to the rescue, took me to another doctors, fed me lunch (where this picture was taken), another appointment and then home back to bed.

Day 28_Picture 28
"Judge me all you want, but keep your verdict to yourself".

Day 29_Picture 29
It always happens.  When you think you're keeping your baby safe, he takes a nose dive off of his little chair.

Day 30_Picture 30
This picture speaks for itself.  I think it is one of Chica's favorite things about Jason.  Also, Day 30?  I can hardly believe it!

Day 31_Picture 31
The rocking chair lesson.  Jason's idea is to stand up and rock, not sit.

Day 32_Picture 32
Today while everyone else (besides me) were taking  naps, Jason woke up first.  So the two of us just hung out in the hallway, living room, and bedroom playing and taking pictures.  Although I love to capture him doing his thing however, when any baby looks up at you like this you can't help but choose it as today's picture.  Enjoy.

Day 33_Picture 33
Cousins

Day 34_Picture 34
A boy and his dog.  Well, Chica was here first.  Before Jason arrived, we had two mixed pit bulls, Harley and Chica.  Harley was a goof ball and went after any thing that made a weird sound but,....he truly loved me.  I was 'his' owner.  We worried about a baby coming into the house with two dogs.  I'm sure anyone expecting a baby worries about how their dog(s) will react.  Harley's personality, I knew that him and Jason would never be.  Sometimes a blessing in disguise solves that problem.  Harley had been losing weight and slept a lot.  About two months after Jason was born, Harley was diagnosed with lymphoma.  He had three large nodules.  His problem had advanced faster than we (or I) noticed. So, I made the best decision any pet owner would.  March 2011 I took Harley to our vet and said our goodbyes.  RIP Harley.  So, how did Chica handle all of this?  She is so loving towards Jason.  I figure its because Jason sends her pennies from heaven breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Although she'll be turning 12 this year, has arthritis in her hind legs (and we can see she is in some pain), she tolerates Jason and sometimes lets her lay against him.  She a wonderful old girl and Jason is lucky to have a dog even at this age.

Day 35_Picture 35

Day 41_Picture 41
I love watching Jason interact.  Especially learning what to do with things, etc., like washing daddy's face.

Day 42_Picture 42
OK, day 42.  Although I feel that majority of the pictures I'm taking take place in the same areas, part of that is due to the time of day/evening they're taken.  It is easy to get the feeling of being in a slump but,...there are still 323 days left of taking pictures.  So, I'm looking forward to when the days change, seasons change, and Jason changing.

Day 43_Picture 43
Good Morning Nonna, how about a nice yogurt kiss before work?

Day 69_Picture 69
Jason was out and about with his dad today.  I think that my 365 day project is starting to make my
son-in-law think a little when taking pictures of Jason.  Israel, (Jason's dad), took this while they were at

Day 191

A 'mothers' love.

Being a photographer, in past educations/experiences, subject matter and a sharp, clear image made a good image.  However, with the 365 Jason Project I've come to learn that capturing the moment is more important.  A lot of images that I've taken are sharp and clear (which most of us look for) however, the key word is 'capturing' the image.  The one moment that makes this image say what it is whether is a sharp, crisp image or something that may be slightly out of focus.

My goal(s) are to capture that very important image whether it is sharp and in focus or slightly out of focus.  As long as I captured that one image in time that I'll never get back that's all that matters.

I really like this image that I call, "A 'mothers' love".
